LennyLamb Onbuhimo PRO Baby Carrier Guide

The Onbuhimo PRO is LennyLamb’s no-waist-belt carrier. It sits on your shoulders instead of your hips, making it the lightest and simplest back carrier in the lineup. Made from woven wrap fabric and available in three sizes — Standard, Toddler, and Preschool — it fits from about 6 months all the way to 5 years. This guide covers who it suits, sizing, how to put it on, care, and how it compares to the rest of the LennyLamb range.

Who the Onbuhimo PRO Is For

The Onbuhimo PRO is a good fit if you want:

  • A carrier with no waist belt. All the weight sits on your shoulders, which makes the Onbuhimo PRO ideal during pregnancy, after a cesarean, or anytime pressure on the abdomen is uncomfortable. It is also easier to put on and take off than a full buckle carrier.
  • The lightest, simplest back carrier. With fewer straps and buckles than any full buckle carrier, the Onbuhimo PRO is quick to learn, quick to hand off to a partner or grandparent, and quick to toss in a bag.
  • A dedicated back carrier. While a front carry is possible for short periods, the Onbuhimo PRO is designed primarily for back carries. If you already have a front carrier and want something specifically for your back, this is it.
  • To keep carrying past toddlerhood. The Preschool size fits children up to about 5 years old (EU size 122), so you can keep carrying well past the age range of most infant-to-toddler carriers.
  • Woven wrap fabric in a buckle carrier. Like all LennyLamb carriers, it is sewn from the same jacquard, herringbone, and broken-twill fabrics as their woven wraps, in dozens of designs and blends.

If you prefer a waist belt for hip support and longer carries, look at the LennyUpgrade PRO or the LennyLight instead.

Key Features

No waist belt

The defining feature of an onbuhimo. Your child’s weight is carried entirely on your shoulders, not your hips. This feels very different from a full buckle carrier — more like a backpack. Many parents find it more comfortable for quick up-and-down carries, and it avoids any pressure on the belly, which makes it a popular choice during pregnancy or postpartum recovery.

Adjustable panel width

All three sizes have smooth, enclosed-tunnel panel width adjustment, so you can widen the seat as your child grows and keep knee-to-knee support at every stage. The Preschool size also adjusts in height, supporting taller children through the preschool years.

Sliding chest belt

The chest belt slides along the full length of the shoulder straps, so you can position it wherever is most comfortable for your body. It keeps the straps from slipping off your shoulders during a back carry.

Detachable hood

A coordinating hood is included and attaches with snaps. It supports your child’s head during naps, shades them from the sun, and provides wind protection. It detaches completely when you don’t need it.

Circoola NFC tag

Each Onbuhimo PRO has a built-in NFC tag. Hold an NFC-enabled phone near it to pull up tutorials plus your carrier’s color, size, model, fabric blend and weight, production date, and serial number.

Sizing and Fit

The Onbuhimo PRO comes in three sizes. Choose by your child’s age and clothing size:

Size Age EU clothing size Best for
Standard 6–24 months 74–92 Babies who can sit unassisted through early toddlerhood
Toddler 12–36 months 80–98 Bigger babies through older toddlers
Preschool 2–5 years 92–122 Toddlers who have outgrown the Toddler size, preschoolers

Your child must be able to sit unassisted before using any size of the Onbuhimo PRO. This is typically around 6 months, but every child is different.

The shoulder straps adjust from 32–114 cm (about 12.5–45 in), covering a wide range of body types and easily shared between caregivers. There is no waist belt to size.

Check for the M-position: knees higher than bottom, fabric supporting them from knee to knee, and a gently rounded back. If the panel is too narrow or too wide, adjust it until you get a proper seat.

How to Use the Onbuhimo PRO

Before every carry, run through the T.I.C.K.S. checklist: Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off the chest, and Supported back.

Most parents use the Onbuhimo PRO for back carries. The most common method is the “superman toss” — place your child on a bed or sofa, lean back into the carrier, and buckle the shoulder straps. With practice it takes just a few seconds.

Front carry (tummy to tummy) is possible for short periods, but the Onbuhimo PRO is designed primarily as a back carrier. If you plan to front carry most of the time, a full buckle carrier like the LennyUpgrade PRO or LennyLight will be more comfortable.

Caring for Your Onbuhimo PRO

  • Machine wash at 30–40 °C (86–104 °F) on a gentle cycle with all buckles fastened.
  • Remove the hood before washing.
  • Skip the fabric softener.
  • Hang to dry when you can, to protect the fabric and hardware.
  • Always check the care label first. Blends with wool, silk, or cashmere need a cooler wash and should never go in the dryer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an onbuhimo?

An onbuhimo is a carrier with no waist belt. Your child’s weight is carried entirely on your shoulders, like a backpack. The LennyLamb Onbuhimo PRO adds buckle closures and an adjustable panel to the traditional onbuhimo design, making it easy to use without any wrapping or tying.

What age can I start using the Onbuhimo PRO?

Your child must be able to sit unassisted, which is typically around 6 months. The Standard size fits from about 6 months (EU clothing size 74). For younger babies, use a full buckle carrier like the LennyUpgrade PRO or LennyLight, both of which fit from 3.2 kg with no insert.

Which size Onbuhimo PRO should I get?

Choose by your child’s current clothing size: Standard for EU 74–92 (about 6–24 months), Toddler for EU 80–98 (about 12–36 months), or Preschool for EU 92–122 (about 2–5 years). If your child is between sizes, try the larger one — you can adjust the panel width down, but you can’t make a too-small panel bigger.

Can I use the Onbuhimo PRO during pregnancy?

Yes. Because there is no waist belt, the Onbuhimo PRO puts no pressure on your abdomen. Many parents continue back carrying an older child throughout pregnancy with an onbuhimo.

Is the Onbuhimo PRO comfortable for long carries?

It depends on your child’s weight and your shoulders. Because all the weight sits on your shoulders, it is best for shorter carries or lighter children. For long hikes or heavy toddlers, a full buckle carrier with a waist belt like the LennyUpgrade PRO distributes the weight more evenly.

Can I front carry in the Onbuhimo PRO?

Front carry (tummy to tummy) is possible for short periods, but the Onbuhimo PRO is designed primarily as a back carrier. If you plan to front carry regularly, a full buckle carrier will be more comfortable.

Does a hood come with the Onbuhimo PRO?

Yes. Every Onbuhimo PRO includes a coordinating detachable hood for head support, sun shade, and wind protection.

What is the difference between the Onbuhimo PRO and the regular Onbuhimo?

The Onbuhimo PRO has a wider panel adjustment range, a sliding chest belt, and a detachable hood. It is available in three sizes (Standard, Toddler, Preschool), while the regular Onbuhimo comes in two. The PRO also includes a Circoola NFC tag for digital access to manuals and carrier information.

Will the Onbuhimo PRO fit plus-size or petite parents?

The shoulder straps adjust from 32–114 cm (about 12.5–45 in), covering a wide range of body types. Since there is no waist belt, torso size is the only fit variable. Reach out with your measurements if you are not sure.

Is the Onbuhimo PRO safety certified?

Yes. It is certified to ASTM F2236-24 and PD CEN/TR 16512:2015 and is recognized as “hip healthy” by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.

How do I wash my Onbuhimo PRO?

Remove the hood, fasten all buckles, and machine wash at 30–40 °C on a gentle cycle. Skip the fabric softener and hang to dry. Check the care label first — wool, silk, and cashmere blends need a cooler wash.
