DIDYMOS Woven Wraps and Slings Guide

DIDYMOS invented the modern woven baby wrap in 1972 and has been weaving them in Germany ever since. A DIDYMOS woven wrap is a long piece of fabric you tie around yourself and your baby — one wrap does front, back, and hip carries from birth through toddlerhood, with no insert, no buckles, and a fully custom fit every time. DIDYMOS also makes the DidySling, a ring sling cut from the same woven wrap fabric.

Who Are DIDYMOS Wraps For?

  • Parents who want the most versatile carrier. One wrap does front, back, and hip carries — no separate carrier for each stage.
  • Parents who want the closest fit. Because you tie the fabric yourself, the wrap molds to your body and your baby’s body. Two parents of very different builds share the same wrap.
  • Parents who value organic, natural materials. DIDYMOS wraps are woven from organic cotton and natural fiber blends (linen, silk, hemp, wool, cashmere) — no synthetic fibers.
  • Parents who want to carry from birth. Woven wraps are one of the safest carriers for newborns — the fabric molds around even the smallest baby with no insert needed.

Choosing Your Size

Wrap size depends on your body, not your baby. The most common sizing guide:

DIDYMOS Size Length Best For
Size 4 (S) ~3.7 m Short wrapping techniques; petite wearers
Size 5 (M) ~4.2 m Petite to average wearers
Size 6 (L) ~4.7 m Average wearers (most common base size)
Size 7 (XL) ~5.2 m Larger or taller wearers
Size 8 (XXL) ~5.7 m Plus-size wearers; multi-layer carries

Tip: Start with a size 6 if you are unsure. You can always tie off extra length, but you cannot add length to a too-short wrap.

DIDYMOS Fabric Types & Blends

Every DIDYMOS wrap starts with organic cotton. Blends add different properties — breathability, softness, warmth, or extra support. Here is what to expect from each fabric type:

100% Organic Cotton

The workhorse of the DIDYMOS range. Pure cotton wraps are durable, easy to wash, and provide good grip for learning wrapping techniques. They come in a range of weights from light to heavy depending on the weave. Cotton wraps are the easiest to care for and the most forgiving for beginners.

  • Weight range: 170–330 g/m²
  • Feel: Sturdy when new, softens beautifully with washing and use
  • Breathability: Good
  • Care: Machine wash 30–40 °C; hang dry
  • Best for: Beginners; year-round use; everyday carrying

Cotton/Linen

Linen adds breathability and a cooler hand feel. Cotton/linen wraps are crisp and textured when new but soften significantly with use and washing. They dry faster than pure cotton and are lighter at the same weave density. An excellent choice for warm climates and summer carrying.

  • Weight range: 180–280 g/m²
  • Feel: Crisp and textured when new; softens with use
  • Breathability: Very good — linen wicks moisture and dries quickly
  • Care: Machine wash 30–40 °C; hang dry
  • Best for: Warm weather; parents who prefer a thinner, crisper wrap

Cotton/Silk

Silk gives the wrap a soft, smooth drape and a subtle sheen. Cotton/silk wraps are lightweight and glide through wrapping passes easily. They feel luxurious against the skin and work well for lighter babies. Silk blends need gentler care than pure cotton.

  • Weight range: 170–240 g/m²
  • Feel: Smooth, drapey, lightweight
  • Breathability: Good
  • Care: Hand wash or machine wash 30 °C on wool/delicate cycle; hang dry
  • Best for: Newborns; lighter babies; special occasions

Cotton/Hemp

Hemp adds strength and structure without adding much weight. Cotton/hemp wraps are supportive and hold their tension well, making them ideal for heavier babies and toddlers. Like linen, hemp wraps start stiff and soften over time.

  • Weight range: 210–300 g/m²
  • Feel: Sturdy and supportive; softens gradually with use
  • Breathability: Very good — hemp is naturally moisture-wicking
  • Care: Machine wash 30–40 °C; hang dry
  • Best for: Heavier babies and toddlers; parents who need extra support

Cotton/Wool (Merino)

Merino wool is naturally temperature-regulating — warm in cold weather and breathable in moderate temperatures. Cotton/wool wraps are soft, cushy, and cozy. They are perfect for autumn, winter, and cooler climates. Wool blends require more careful washing.

  • Weight range: 220–300 g/m²
  • Feel: Soft, cushy, warm
  • Breathability: Temperature-regulating (warm when cold, cool when warm)
  • Care: Hand wash or machine wash 30 °C on wool cycle; lay flat to dry
  • Best for: Cold weather; autumn and winter carrying

Cotton/Cashmere

Cashmere adds ultra-soft luxury and light warmth. Cotton/cashmere wraps are among the softest in the DIDYMOS range. They are lightweight yet warm, with a beautiful drape. These wraps are a premium option and require gentle care.

  • Weight range: 190–260 g/m²
  • Feel: Ultra-soft, lightweight, warm
  • Breathability: Good, with natural insulation
  • Care: Hand wash or machine wash 30 °C on wool cycle; lay flat to dry
  • Best for: Cooler weather; parents who want a luxury wrap

DIDYMOS DidySling (Ring Sling)

The DidySling is a shorter piece of DIDYMOS woven wrap fabric with a pair of aluminum rings sewn at one end. It goes over one shoulder and adjusts by pulling the tail through the rings — no tying needed. Ring slings are the fastest carrier to put on and take off, ideal for short carries, quick errands, and the up-and-down toddler stage.

  • Fits from birth through toddlerhood
  • Front and hip carry positions
  • Same organic woven wrap fabric as DIDYMOS wraps
  • One size fits all wearers

How to Wrap: Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC)

The Front Wrap Cross Carry is the most popular carry for beginners. Here is the basic technique:

  1. Find the middle of the wrap and place it against your chest.
  2. Bring both tails over your shoulders to your back.
  3. Cross the tails behind your back in an X.
  4. Bring the tails under your arms to the front.
  5. Place your baby against your chest, inside the front panel.
  6. Pull each tail over the baby’s legs (one at a time) to create two crossed passes.
  7. Bring the tails behind your back and tie in a double knot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size DIDYMOS wrap should I get?

Size depends on your body, not your baby. Most people start with a size 6 (~4.7 m). Petite wearers may prefer a size 5; larger or taller wearers a size 7. See the sizing table above.

Can I use a woven wrap from birth?

Yes. Woven wraps are one of the safest carriers for newborns. The fabric molds around the baby with no insert needed, supporting the natural spine curve and hip position from day one.

What fabric blend is best for beginners?

A 100% organic cotton wrap in a medium weight (around 200–250 g/m²). Cotton is forgiving, easy to wash, and provides good grip for learning wrapping techniques. Lisca (herringbone) weave cottons are particularly beginner-friendly because they have a slight diagonal stretch that makes it easier to get a snug wrap.

What wrap fabric is best for summer?

Cotton/linen blends are the best choice for hot weather. Linen is naturally moisture-wicking and dries quickly. A lightweight plain-weave cotton wrap also works well in the heat. Avoid heavy jacquard wraps and wool blends in summer.

What wrap fabric is best for winter?

Cotton/wool (merino) blends are ideal for cold weather. Merino wool naturally regulates temperature and provides warmth without bulk. Cotton/cashmere is another warm, soft option. A heavier-weight jacquard cotton wrap also provides good warmth.

Do DIDYMOS wraps shrink?

About 3–5% on the first wash. A size 6 at 4.7 m may become roughly 4.5 m after washing. Dimensions stabilize after the first wash.

What is the difference between a woven wrap and a ring sling?

A woven wrap is a long piece of fabric you tie around yourself and your baby, using both shoulders. A ring sling (DidySling) is a shorter piece threaded through rings — it goes over one shoulder and adjusts without tying. Wraps offer more carry positions; ring slings are faster to put on and take off.
